My First Major Competition: Gerd Kanter's Story
Olympic and world champion in discus throw, Gerd Kanter, shared memories of his first major competition in the ICG Tallinn 2025 video series.
Gerd Kanter made his international debut at the age of 22, when he competed at the U23 European Championships and the Universiade. His story is undoubtedly inspiring — a reminder that with hard work, even late bloomers can rise to the top.“I really discovered discus throw only in the later years of high school, and started taking it seriously during my first years at university. That’s why I broke into the international scene quite late,” said Kanter, who also serves as a patron of ICG Tallinn 2025.
"My First Major Competition" is a video series where Estonian athletes share memories of their early steps onto the international stage. Through their stories, they encourage young participants of the International Children’s Games, taking place in Tallinn from 4–7 August, to make the most of their own competition experience.
