To promote the separate collection of bio-waste, Tallinn is distributing bio-waste collection containers free of charge to everybody interested.

As of December 1st, companies will change the price lists for waste collection in all the areas of Tallinn. The prices for emptying mixed waste containers will increase, while the prices for emptying other waste containers will remain the same.

Tallinn will distribute a total of 100 separate waste collection kits to 17 educational institutions in this spring, with an aim to improve the efficiency of separate waste collection in schools and hobby schools.

According to the new waste management plan, Tallinn will expand separate collection of biowaste and textile waste, and turn waste collection stations into circular economy centres.

Among household waste, Tallinn residents are most often sorting paper and cardboard, returnable packaging and hazardous waste.

In the business sector during the past year, supporting commercial operators affected by COVID-19 restrictions was a main priority for Tallinn. Various circular economy projects were also launched.

The Tallinn City Council recently adopted the Tallinn Waste Management Plan 2022-2026, which aims to expand the separate collection of bio-waste, promote the collection and handling of textile waste, turn waste stations into recycling centres and encourage re-use. Collecting organic waste separately will become compulsory for all properties already in 2023.

In autumn 2022, a support measure for conference tourism was created to attract more conference tourists to Tallinn. The maximum amount of support is planned to be up to €30 000 per conference. Tallinn will start supporting international conferences in the city next year. The first call for applications has already been launched and is open until 25 January.

Compared to 2021, separating all waste by type has become a bit more popular. Of the types of waste, 75% of Tallinn residents collect paper and cardboard, plastic containers, glass containers, hazardous waste and electric and electronic waste separately. 87% of the residents of Tallinn collect paper and cardboard separately.

From 1 June, all properties, irrespective of their purpose or the number of apartments, will have to start collecting their bio-waste separately. From tomorrow, 15 March, in addition to single-family houses, semi-detached houses, terraced houses and houses with up to two apartments and houses with 3 to 9 apartments can also apply for free bio-waste collection containers.
